The Long Engagement: study for composition

Arthur Hughes

The Long Engagement: study for composition

Date: c. 1854 - 59

Materials: Pencil

Both this and another preliminary drawing for 'The Long Engagement' belonged to the Pre-Raphaelite sculptor Alexander Munro, with whom Hughes shared a studio in London from 1852 to 1858.

This sheet is similar the final design, but also echoes the smaller painting 'Amy' in giving prominence to the female figure: the man, already wearing his sober hat, literally emerges from the shadows.
