Elijah and the Widow's Son

Ford Madox Brown

Elijah and the Widow's Son

Date: 1864

Materials: Oil on wood panel; in original frame

This subject, from I Kings 17:23, was one of three originally chosen by Brown for hiscontributions to the Dalziel's engraved 'Bible Gallery'. The incident depicted occurs during Elijah's trial of strength with the followers of Baal. The son of a widow with whom the prophet was lodging has fallen sick and is deemed to be dead; Elijah prays over the body and the boy is restored to life. The widow tells Elijah that "by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth".
