 The Return of the Princess

Date: 1872

Materials: Stained glass

Rossetti lent Howell the set of cartoons for St George and the Dragon, probably with the intention of having copies made, although he had great difficulty in getting them back. Four such copies, all in pencil, ink and watercolour, were presented anonymously to the Birmingham collection in 1905: these are of The Skulls brought to the King, St George and the Dragon, The Return of the Princess, and The Wedding of St George. Copied by Rosa Corder (1853-1893) ,an associate and mistress of Howell from 1873, and a suspected trader in fake Rossetti drawings.
