The Song of Solomon

Edward Burne-Jones

The Song of Solomon

Date: c. 1976

Materials: Pencil

A set of five large designs illustrating The Song of Solomon and dating to about 1876 seems to be related to Burne-Jones's association with the Royal School of Needlework, founded in 1872 by his friend Madeline Wyndham, although only one subject is known to have been made as an embroidery.

This sheet depicts Solomon and the Bride of Lebanon, its inscription (from the Vulgate) reading: "Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness leaning upon her beloved?"
